How to find the New York per diem
- Enter the first and last day of travel. New York City is already chosen.
- Pick employee or self-employed.
- Read the total. Watch the stars in the table: the first and last day carry 75% of the $92 M&IE rate, which is $69.
- For upstate New York, type the city in the destination box. Albany, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse each have their own rates.
- The link in the address bar keeps your dates.
- Read the yellow notes above the table, if there are any. They appear when the rates have expired or when a date is outside the loaded files.
- For a single night, set the last day one day after the first. A one-night trip has two travel days and one night.
The result is a ceiling for lodging and a fixed amount for meals. If your employer pays a per diem at the GSA rate, the total is what the policy allows for these dates. If you are self-employed, treat the meals figure as your deductible meals and add your actual hotel receipts separately. Changing the dates updates every number at once, so try the end of February and the start of March to see the rate climb from $189 to $296.

What does New York cost across New Year?
Five days from 29 December 2026 to 2 January 2027: the nights of 29, 30 and 31 December are at $358, which is $1,074, and the night of 1 January is at $189, so lodging is $1,263. M&IE is 69 + 92 + 92 + 92 + 69 = $414. The total is $1,677. The rate drops by $169 a night at midnight on 31 December.
When is the New York City per diem lowest?
In January and February, at $189 a night. March to June is $296, July and August $250, and the period from 1 September to 31 December is $358.
How does New York rank?
Only 9 of the 295 destinations have a higher peak lodging rate than New York City’s $358. The peak rate rose by $16 from FY2026, when it was $342. M&IE is $92, the top level, which 33 destinations share.
Is the New York State per diem the same as the city rate?
No. The state has 18 other entries in the file, from Albany to West Point, and the places not listed use the standard rate of $113 and $68. For example, Tarrytown / White Plains / New Rochelle and Riverhead / Ronkonkoma / Melville are separate entries.
What if I am self-employed in New York?
Only meals count, at half. A four-day Manhattan trip has M&IE of $322 and a deductible amount of $161. For the hotel you deduct what you paid, with receipts.
How much is a one-night trip to New York?
Two travel days at $69 and one night. A night from 9 to 10 February 2027, in the winter low, is $189 + $138 = $327. A night from 14 to 15 September 2027, in the peak, is $358 + $138 = $496. The $169 gap is lodging only, because M&IE is $92 all year.
Is it worth shifting a New York trip by a few weeks?
Possibly. The nightly ceiling falls from $358 to $189 on 1 January and rises to $296 on 1 March. A four-night stay in the first half of February has a lodging ceiling of 4 × $189 = $756, against 4 × $296 = $1,184 in March and 4 × $358 = $1,432 in October. The gap between October and February is $676 for four nights.
How this tool works and where the numbers come from
The rates are the GSA FY2027 lodging and M&IE rates for New York City taken without change from the flat file; the table in the guide is generated from the same data the calculator reads. A trip is priced night by night, so a trip that crosses a change of season gets both lodging rates. The first and last day of travel count 75 percent of the M&IE rate, and the self-employed view follows IRS Publication 463 (meals only, 50 percent deductible).

What if my hotel in New York costs more than the rate?
The lodging rate is a ceiling for the standard reimbursement, not a price. Federal agencies can authorize actual expenses above it in some cases, and private employers set their own rules, so ask your travel office or employer. For the self-employed there is no lodging ceiling at all: you deduct what you paid.
Can I use these rates for a trip after 30 September 2027?
No. They are the FY2027 rates and expire on that date. GSA publishes the New York City rate again for each new fiscal year, and this page then shows the new file. If you open the page after the expiry date, it shows a warning.
